I'm trying to reverse engineer a .bin file but binwalk doesn't give much information other than it says that there is a bitmap contained. The .bin file is 32 MB. Ghidra also doesn't input anything useful. Any ideas about how I can decompile a .bin file? I know that there are other tools out there for decompiling .bin files but they're not free and not for rudimentary use.

  • Have you checked to see whether the bin file is some archive format? zip/rar/gz/tar/xz etc. If binwalk isn't finding much in a 32MB file then it may be compressed/encrypted. Jul 28, 2022 at 23:30
  • Which function lets me extract? The normal tar function in the terminal doesn't seem to work. I tried it on windows using 7zip and it output a folder of size 225 KB. Jul 28, 2022 at 23:51
  • What's in that folder, can you send us an image? Also, where did you get .bin file from? You should provide more details

  • The generated output folder contains three folders: One folder contains an image, another folder is empty, and the last folder contains a textfile. It's a dead end for me. That's all I can share. Jul 29, 2022 at 5:21
  • Where this file comes from? Is it a firmware or OTA image, executable or known save file from a game? Do you know which device it is for? Does it have meaningful strings inside?
