I have an old program I want to run on a Windows machine inside a Virtualbox. However, I'm getting the following error:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070424)

I've searched the internet, but the cause seems to be different depending on the software that is run. Can I use tools like x64dbg to find out where the error is coming from and to possibly solve it?

I'm getting the error on:

  • Windows XP in a virtualbox
  • Windows 7 in a Virtualbox
  • Windows 10 on a real machine

But not on

  • Windows XP on a real machine

Maybe some of the Windows reverse engineering guru's here can shed a light on where this error might come from.

Thanks, Sam

  • can you share the binary or possibly a sandbox report of it (function calls with values) such as cuckoo? – Nordwald Feb 1 at 10:41
  • Will try out Cuckoo to see what's going on. thanks – Sam Feb 4 at 9:12
